This is Sebastian Caine’s (Kevin Bacon) motion capture mask used in the 2000 Paul Verhoeven’s invisible-man thriller Hollow Man. An experiment goes horribly awry and scientist Caine (Bacon) becomes permanently invisible. In order to be seen by his colleagues, they pour latex over his face to make a visible mask. This particular mask was used during those scenes as colleague Linda (Elisabeth Shue) cuts eyes and mouth opening in the mask.
For the visual effects of the film, this flesh-colored mask, worn by Bacon, has blue, motion capture dots all over it in order to capture the movements of Bacon’s face during the scenes so that they could computer generate the invisible man’s lack of eyes and mouth. The mask is made of silicone and resembles melting plastic, as it does in the movie. This recognizable piece comes on it's original production wooden stand and includes a production tag which reads, "3 of 5 Cutting Mask, #5 Left on Set" and the date "9-16-99." The mask is in very good condition with some light wear and remnants of distressing left from production use. The mouth edges have started to break and I will hopefully fix this issue before it goes worse.
Screenmatched to the scene where Linda cuts both the mouth and the eyes, thanks to the unique and unrepeatable cutting pattern. The fact up to 5 "Cutting masks" existed, screenmatching this one on the final cut adds rarity and value to the item.
