This is a coat worn by Richard Gere as Jack Sommersby in the 1993 romantic drama Sommersby. In 1867, Jack Sommersby (Richard Gere), returns from the Civil War to his rural Tennessee town. His wife, Laurel (Jodie Foster) and child were waiting for him. After his long absence, however, his true identity is uncertain.
This frock coat is made of velvet-like corduroy and was custom made for the film. The coat has a distressed appearance which was designed by costume designer Marilyn Vance-Straker, whose previous films include "The Untouchables" and "Pretty Woman". It features Western Costume Co. label bearing Gere's name sewn inside the pocket.
