In Twister, two renowned storm chasers, Jo (Helen Hunt) and Bill (Bill Paxton), work together with the purpose of creating a more advanced storm warning system: Jo has built four identical tornado research devices called DOROTHY, based upon Bill's designs. The device is designed to release hundreds of sensors into the center of a tornado to study its structure from the inside.

These are two of the working (hero) sensors used in the "Dorothy" machine. A key prop to the film, sensors are made of two halves, one opaque in silver finish and one clear part, and each include an electronic circuit, a minibattery and a tail (antenna) to transmit the variables to the scientists' computers. Only a handful of hero sensors were made; the rest were stunts. The stunt versions were made to run on the ground every time a tornado put Dorothy aside. You can see in the pics halves of sensors and empty sensors too, the stunt ones.

Towards the end of the movie, they placed cut up soda cans on the sensors in order to assist them in flying into the twisters. None of the sensors with the original soda cans attached were saved from being thrown away. This particular one in the display has the correct year of Pepsi can attached just for display purposes. It was built the same way you see in the movie (pictured in the photos on the left).

You can see from the close up pictures that they have red and green lights in them that light up still, after... SIXTEEN years! The lights are turned on or off by moving each half of the sensor on opposite directions and once on, blink every second alternating in color.

These came from the same property master as the Back to the Future movies.
