A pair of framed hand-drawn AT-ST stop-motion cells by Phil Tippett from Richard Marquand’s sci-fi classic Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi. Phil Tippett animated the AT-ST walkers using stop-motion animation. His team used these animation cells to visualize the AT-ST walking movement before creating the stop-motion sequence. These acetate cels were used like traditional animation cels, and were used to direct animation in the complicated shot of the chicken walker tripping on logs. They could be laid over the in-progress shot to make notes on timing the walker animation to the logs animation.Tippett received a Special Achievement Oscar® for Visual Effects for his work on this film at the 56th Academy Awards®.
The cells are made of clear acetate and feature an AT-ST drawn with black marker with notes describing the walker movement and animation frames, like ‘Kick Out 172 Swift.’
