This is an original Batman Batsuit used in the 1992 Tim Burton Superhero sequel Batman Returns. In the film, Batman (Michael Keaton) adorns this signature batsuit while reprising the main title role of the caped crusader. The batsuit has been mounted on a form to replicate the look of the suit when it rests in the Bat Vault in the film, waiting to be needed again by the dark knight.
The main bodysuit is a stunt suit used by production during filming, and is comprised of foam latex armor components over a spandex jumpsuit, which includes an interior tag labeling the suit as designated for stunt use. The stunt suits for the film were made from the same molds as the Keaton suits and were identical, as stunt men with the same build as Keaton served as his doubles. It features the signature armor-plated ribbing that is specific to this film, and a different look to the muscled anatomy styling of the original suit. The lower leg and knee armor on the bodysuit have deteriorated substantially, and the forearm armor pieces have also deteriorated to a lesser extent - this is due to the thin nature of these components of the armor, and the fact that they were always tucked into boots or gloves. Fortunately these components do not show with the cape on the costume. The chest armor and hip armor on the bodysuit also exhibit minor wear and tear.
The cape is also a stunt piece, though it is finished to the same standards as the Keaton capes were for the film. The cape is in beautiful condition, remaining as supple as it would have been during filming, and retaining much of it's original sheen. The cape features the round metal plate clasp in the front that attaches to the chest armor and allows the signature bat emblem to be installed. Note that the bat emblem included here is a replica for display purposes.
The main cowl on this piece is an original production made cowl, though it was not used on screen. It is made of foam latex and is supported by a custom-made head form, which is attached to the body form that the rest of the costume sits on. The cowl remains reasonably soft and supple though it does display some wear from age.
Both the bodysuit and the cape were obtained directly from Warner Bros. Studios, and include original WB COAs (certificate of authenticity), and the cowl was acquired from a senior member of the bat team from production.
