These are fired blank Spencer cartridges shot during the first days battle scenes when General Buford's (Sam Elliott) cavalry holds off the advancing Confederates waiting for General Reynolds Corps to arrive. The top two were fired by Sam Elliott between takes while testing out one of the Spencer carbines supplied by the props dept. as well as his autograph acquired that day of filming.
