Joan Wilder (Kathleen Turner), a shy romantic-adventure writer is hurled into a real-life adventure beyond her wildest dreams in the jungles of South America in order to save her sister by delivering a treasure map to her captors. She is helped out by a rogue mercenary Jack Colton (Michael Douglas) who has ulterior motives. Together they search for the priceless gem located in the map all the while plotting to save Joan’s sister.

While these book covers were designed and produced for use in Romancing the Stone, they did not see screen use in the final cut of the movie.They were however reused in Jewel of the Nile and can be seen in Joan's book signing just before their yacht is blown up.
